Reimagining the SIS: Reflections from Ellucian Live 2025

ListEdTech Student Information Systems

Key Takeaways:

  • Reimagining the SIS: Ellucian is redefining the SIS as a student-focused, AI-driven platform built in the cloud.
  • AI with Real Impact: New tools improve advising, reveal missed credentials, and connect programs to careers.
  • Cloud as a Strategy: The most advanced features require cloud adoption—now a strategic, not just technical, move.

Last week, I had the opportunity to attend Ellucian Live in Orlando, where I was invited by the company to join the event. The extra sunshine was a welcome treat—especially after a long winter—and as always, it was fun to catch up with old friends, make new connections, and enjoy long conversations with fellow analysts over a few beverages.

The event kicked off, as it often does, with a student showcase—this year featuring violinists, singers, and dancers from the University of Florida. A reminder, woven into the programming from the start, that the work we do in higher education technology ultimately centers on students.

With more than 6,000 attendees from over 1,000 institutions and 32 countries (including 2,000 first-timers), the energy at Ellucian Live was high. And this year, a clear theme emerged: Ellucian is not just refining its core products—it’s redefining the very idea of the Student Information System (SIS).

Reimagining the SIS in an AI World

Ellucian’s message is that AI is everywhere—but what matters most is how institutions apply it. The company argues that technology should amplify the expertise of educators and administrators, not replace it. “Ask any student what changed their life in college,” a speaker said. “It’s not software—it’s a person.”

The centerpiece of this vision is Ellucian Student, a new, cloud-native SIS that integrates AI across the student lifecycle. It builds on the legacy of Banner and Colleague, but with a new focus: rather than being just a system about students, it’s designed to be a system for students.

Key innovations include:

  • Smart Plan: An AI-driven tool that acts like a GPS for academic planning. It’s already reduced advising time by 60% at some institutions, with over 500,000 automated updates.
  • Award: Surfaces students who are close to completing additional credentials or could be fast-tracked toward alternate degrees. One institution used it to identify over 2,400 degrees that would have otherwise been missed.
  • Journey: Uses real-time labor market data to map academic programs to careers, giving students a clearer sense of how their coursework translates into skills and job opportunities.
  • AI Agents: Automate repetitive tasks in areas like CRM, HR, and finance. One example showed a previously 160-hour process now completed in under one hour.
  • Insights: Provides real-time, actionable data to help finance and operations leaders focus on strategic decisions rather than manual reporting.

A Shift from Software to Strategy

Importantly, most of these innovations are only available to institutions that have moved to the cloud. While Banner and Colleague are still supported, the real evolution is happening in the SaaS space—where institutions benefit from continuous updates, lower total cost of ownership, and easier interoperability with other systems.

Currently, about 15% of Ellucian’s 2,600 customers have made the cloud transition. Another 100 institutions are expected to move in 2025. The company is clearly signaling that cloud is not just a technical upgrade—it’s a strategic foundation for what comes next.

This shift also reframes the role of the SIS itself. It’s no longer just a back-office database. In Ellucian’s model, the SIS becomes a dynamic platform that supports everything from student planning to workforce readiness.

The Human Element

Despite all the tech talk, the most consistent message from Ellucian was about people. The platform is packed with AI, but the company is careful to frame it as a tool—one that works best when guided by the experience and judgment of educators, advisors, and institutional leaders.

One speaker summed it up well: “In a world where everyone has AI, expertise is what matters.”

The event also highlighted the importance of partnerships, both with institutions and among peers in the industry. Texas Southern University’s collaboration with Ellucian was showcased as an example of how shared goals can accelerate innovation and student success.

What’s Next

Ellucian Live 2025 painted a compelling picture of where higher ed tech is headed: smarter, more connected, and increasingly shaped by data and AI. But it also made the case that transformation only works when it’s grounded in the realities of campus life and student needs.

For institutions still relying on legacy SIS systems, the path forward may be complex—but the direction is clear. Reimagining the SIS means moving beyond a back-office database to embrace a strategic hub that drives student success.

And that’s a conversation worth continuing, preferably over another round of drinks with good company.

Who Are HigherEd’s Tech Leaders?

This year, I’ve been revisiting some of the classic business books: Blue Ocean Shift, Free, The Innovator’s Dilemma, Zero to One, and of course, Crossing the Chasm. That last one really got me thinking about early adopters. In tech markets, they’re the people (or in HigherEd, the institutions) who are comfortable taking risks, trying something new, and shaping the market ... Who Are HigherEd’s Tech Leaders?  Read More

Anthology’s Chapter 11 Filing: Breaking Up to Refocus

September 2025 marked a major turning point for Anthology, the owner of Blackboard and several other higher education technology platforms. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the U.S. after efforts to sell itself or parts of its business outside of court failed. The filing is not a liquidation. Instead, it is a structured reorganization designed to ... Anthology’s Chapter 11 Filing: Breaking Up to Refocus  Read More

Rethinking Market Saturation in EdTech

Market saturation is a concept we often discuss at ListEdTech because it comes up frequently with our clients. Investors want to know if a market still has room to grow, while startups want to understand whether they are entering a space with opportunities or one that is already crowded. Last year, we explored saturation by ... Rethinking Market Saturation in EdTech  Read More
